Suggestions to improve your screen reader experience in your PC or Mac:

Always be updated: Use the latest versions of operating systems, assistive technology and apps.

Zoom into your screen: Zooming into your screen will help you see things more clearly on the following devices:

Windows:

  1. Press the “Ctrl” key and plus sign (+) at the same time to zoom in.
  2. You can also use the “Magnifier” application under “Accessories”.

Mac:

  1. Go to “System Preferences”.
  2. Open “Universal Access”.
  3. Select the “Seeing” tab.
  4. Check the box under “Zoom” to “On”.

iOS device:

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Tap “Accessibility”.
  3. Tap “Zoom”.
  4. Toggle it “On”.

Another trick is to use “Ctrl” (“Cmd” on Mac) plus the plus (+) or minus (-) keys when you are in a web browser.

Control font size and color: Enlarging font sizes or changing the color can help you read better on the following devices:

Chrome:

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Tap“Appearance”.
  3. Tap “Font size” for font size.
  4. Tap “Customize fonts” to change font types and size.
  5. or Tap set default “Page zoom” to set page zoom.

Safari:

  1. Open Safari
  2. Tap AA the website Settings button on the left side of the search field.
  3. Tap A to decrease the font size and A to increase it.
  4. or Press Command-Plus sign (+) to zoom in / press Command-Plus sign (-) to zoom out

Internet Explorer:

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Tap “Appearance”.
  3. Tap “Page zoom” set default “Page zoom”.

Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Choose “settings”
  2. Tap “Language and Appearance”
  3. Tap “Fonts”.

Enable screen-readers: Screen-readers allow an audible access to the web content.

There are free options available including JAWS and NVDA for Windows and VoiceOver for Mac. You can use this with your favorite web browser.

Accessibility tools for mobile devices:

VoiceOver for iOS and TalkBack for Android are the screen-readers that come built-in.

To turn on VoiceOver:

  1. Go to“Settings”.
  2. Tap “Accessibility ”.
  3. Tap “VoiceOver”.
  4. Toggle “VoiceOver” on.

To turn on TalkBack :

  1. Go to“Settings”
  2. Tap “Accessibility ”.
  3. Toggle “VoiceOver” on.

You can set the “Accessibility Shortcut” to “VoiceOver” from the “Accessibility” page in order to triple-click the “Home” button to toggle VoiceOver on and off.

TalkBack has a similar feature. “Zoom”, “Magnifier”, “Invert Colors”, “Color Filters”, and “Reduce White Point” are other features and tools on iOS that you can use. These are also available through the “Accessibility Shortcut”.
